Too Much Of Politics Over Policy: 5 Considerations

Is the American system of governing, and political system, wounded, destroyed, weakened, or, merely, undergoing a period, of extreme distress? Those, who have followed politics, and the national news, for decades, realize and recognize, there is widespread apathy, within our electorate, which probably, largely explains, our relatively, low, voter turnout! In addition, many, who vote, do so, based on the empty promises, and rhetoric of political candidates, as well as their perceptions, personal biases, and prejudice, and, rather than hopes and aspirations, focus on self - interest! Unfortunately, we often, witness, far too much emphasis on partisan politics, over, quality policy, and the needs of the American people. With that in mind, this article will attempt to briefly review, examine, and consider, using the mnemonic approach, many of these concerns, and considerations. 1. Political/ personal agenda: Who should, versus, who do, elected officials, actually serve, and represent? T...

Fictional Writing in the Context of Politics and Society

The contemporary political literature generally traces down the issues like democratic reforms and the problems that concern the rural poor of developing countries. The best way to explore politics is to jot down your experiences as a researcher and journalist which most of them do today. The vast literature questions the prevailing notions in the political world and society as well as demarcates the desperate hopelessness and choice. About Issues Bothering Rural Masses The writings also talk of the power play that goes behind policy shortfalls at the Centre while neglecting the rural masses as a substantial part of the population. The current texts draw upon issues of the rural poor leading to farmer suicides - a burning topic throughout the developing nations. Mainly, the literature talks of ways through which agriculture can make an impact to bring farmers out of their miseries. Go to the South-Central part and you have to deal with the tyranny of moneylenders and repercus...

Political Science Programs

Political science programs range from associate's degrees to doctoral degrees; the type of degree program you choose should depend on what your career goals are. Students of other majors also typically take political science courses to fulfill their general education requirements. Some students in majors such as journalism may also minor in political science to supplement their education and make themselves more viable job candidates with an area of specialty. There are many things you can learn by studying political science and many career options that may be open to you with this type of education. These courses teach more than just politics. On a basic level, you will gain an understanding of how our political system works and how other political systems throughout the world have worked. You will also learn the histories of all these systems to gain a broad understanding of how things came to be the way they are. You will learn about legal systems and judicial systems. Dur...

Office Politics is Killing Us

We have big problems at work and they are getting worse in a hurry. Stress is at an all time high and more than a few employees are bringing guns to exit interviews. Hired hands can wave goodbye quickly these days and that once admired employee trait to "Just let it go, John. The boss didn't mean anything by that..." is not cutting the mustard anymore. Maybe our government or perhaps big business will save us? Don't hold your breath. This is from the United States Department of Labor website: "Its most extreme form, homicide, is the fourth-leading cause of fatal occupational injury in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), there were 564 workplace homicides in 2005 in the United States, out of a total of 5,702 fatal work injuries." (1) Another 2005 survey conducted by the U.S. government indicates that: "Nearly five percent of the 7.1 million private industry busines...

Business, Hand-in-hand With Politics

The business community is one of the most influential and powerful sectors right next to the government of any nation. The business community has the capacity to manipulate the economy of a nation. They have the capacity to control and dictate the prices despite what the government and its laws set. This predicament is not only true among powerful countries but the third world countries as well. The business sector is the largest source of revenue for any government anywhere in the free world. This is why the business community is influential and powerful. A nation's power is generally measured by two major factors. The first is the strength of its military. The second is the strength of its economy. This is why business and politics can't be separated. It is true that the business sector is essential to the continued existence of a nation. No country can have a healthy economy without a strong business community. Without the business community a country will not have a s...

Healthy Impatience

If patience is a virtue and we're living and working at breakneck speed, do we have to give up our virtue in the name of profitability? The surprising answer is probably not. If you and your employees have a healthy impatience, you will refuse to remain stuck because when people put their ego aside and don't have to be the one with the answers, they can reach out for help and get unstuck quickly. And it creates results - in fact, American Express is just one company rating its managers on healthy impatience. And the focus isn't solely on impatience. It's also on healthfulness. Unhealthy Impatience vs. Healthy Impatience Just like me, you're probably all too familiar with the feeling of unhealthy impatience: the panic, mind-racing, the pressure-based decisions and overreacting. We lose our mindfulness and get caught up in the chaos of now, now, now! A client told me today of a political leader who was the target of a back-channel attack. What did the po...

The Evolution of Classical Satire Into Modern Day Political Humor

Satire, as defined by the Britanica Concise Encyclopedia, is an artistic form in which human or individual vices, folly, abuses, or shortcomings are held up to censure by means of irony, ridicule, or other methods, sometimes with an intent to bring about improvement. Literature and drama are its chief means of expression, but it is also found in other forms of media such as film, the visual arts, and political cartoons. Satires had been present in Greek Literature, with Aristophanes as well as in Roman Literature with Juvenal and Horace. Juvenal and Horace's satires have since then developed according to their perspectives. To Horace, the satirist is a refined man who sees stupidity and insanity everywhere, but is moved to gentle laughter rather than to rage. To Juvenal, on the other hand, the satirist is a respectable man who is horrified and angered by corruption. Horace's satires are friendlier in tone, thus containing no dangerous attacks against powerful individuals or s...

Top Methods For Utilizing Political Donors Lists

Few Things Can Benefit Your Candidate Like Political Donors Lists There seem to be no shortage of fundraisers for politicians with party clout or media exposure, but for smaller scale elections or battles against entrenched incumbents, the monetary flow can be the most difficult aspect of running a campaign. It has been shown in many cases that local elections depend more upon the individual donations of citizens rather than the support of businesses or lobbyists, making the search for donors ever more elusive. Many successful candidates have found that political donors lists allow their campaign finances to be replenished with a minimum of effort, allowing them to put valuable resources towards other advertising or public appearances. The difficulty in any election is gaining enough exposure that your name and position, regardless of its popularity, will be commonplace enough in discussions that your message will have a chance to be heard. Ultimately, the only way to gain me...

A Comparison of Canadian and American Political Systems

People outside of the "Americas" can often get confused understanding and comparing the differences between the US and Canadian models, forms and structures of government. In the United States there are 50 states with a federal government. The subunit, that is each state, has its own governor and state legislature. The federal government of course of the USA, has at its head the President (currently President Obama) along with 2 houses of legislature. These are the US House of Representatives (with local elected members referred to as "Congressmen" or perhaps "Congress Women" and the US Senate with "Senators" elected from each and every state. There are many more Congress people per state than elected Senators over all. Some will tell you that Senators carry much more power and clout than the Congressmen in the House of Representatives, whereas in Canada it's not the Canadian Senate and Senators who wield the greatest power and effect c...

Political Satire on US Television

Political satire is the most 'serious' form of expression in cultures across the world. Political satire is basically a form of expression which uses, ridicule, irony, sarcasm etc. to expose the folly or vice, or to lampoon an individual or a system related to politics to try, and bring about a political change. From print to cinema, political satire has been present in all media and has left a long-lasting impact on societies. In US, many satirists have commented upon the state of political affairs since the days of American war of Independence. However, the stand out political satire has been the shows on US television. The two stand-out genres of satirical shows, which originated from US are- late night talk shows and animated series. Over the years, many late night talk shows have been aired on US television and each one of them has been tremendously popular. The first show in this genre, which continues to run till date, is "Saturday Night Live". First ...

Public Officials Options: Adversarial, Cooperative, Policy, Or Politics?

Most Americans, historically, proudly pointed to the many freedoms and liberties, we take for - granted, which most of the rest of the world, lacks. Unfortunately, with that assuming it is, a given, we also have the lowest voter participation rate, in the free world. For many years, this percentage hovered at about 50%, but in the last Presidential election, in 2016, even fewer individuals took advantage of this right. Unfortunately, we realize it's a right, but, most of us, seem to not believe, it should also be an obligation! Then, when someone, who many seem to disagree with, is elected, we resort to blaming and complaining, everyone except ourselves! This is probably a significant reason, we end up with a variety of different types of public officials, some focused on service, but most, disappointing us! Every elected, public official must realize and recognize, he can proceed in several ways: adversarial; cooperative; policy; or politics! 1. Adversarial : Whether one, is...

Leaders and Organizational Politics

Leaders work with peers, report to bosses and lead teams as part of their daily work routine. This network of inter-dependent relationships, sources of power as a result of organization structure and authority frameworks, personality types, organization values and performance expectations often combine to create organizational politics, which if not managed will result in performance inhibiting work environments and demotivated people. Organizational politics is found in all organizations and it can be positive or negative. When the politics helps move the organization in the right direction and speeds up the implementation of strategic initiatives it adds value. However when organizational politics creates division, encourages power struggles and promotes internal conflicts requiring higher level of management involvement it saps an organization of energy and effort that may be used toward more productive work. As a leader there are many actions that can be taken to reduce t...

The First "Third" Political Party In The United States

The Anti-Masonic movement spawned the first third political party in the United States, known as the Anti-Masonic Political Party (also known as the Anti-Masonic Movement). It occurred in upstate New York in 1828. The strange disappearance of Captain William Morgan precipitated the movement. Captain William Morgan tried to join a new order of Masons in Batavia, New York, and when they rebuffed his attempts, he said he was going to publish a book outlining the secrets and inner workings of their fraternity. This was unthinkable to the Masons, and they tried everything they knew to stop him, finally resorting to kidnapping and murder. When these accusations were brought against the Masons, a public outcry ensued. More and more speculation about what actually went on in their secret society became a hot topic of conversation. People feared the members of Freemasonry and believed they sought to take over their communities as an elitist group who were disparaging rules of good cit...

Politics, Sex, and the Family

America was founded by thinkers, serious thinkers who struggled with new theories of how things ought to be, rather than resting content with how things were. They believed the old political relationships between the rulers and the ruled were falsely based on pretended rights of strength, wealth, birthright and tradition. They concluded that these connections were manmade rather than natural, and therefore were not morally binding. They decided that the only morally binding relationship between a government and its people would have to be based on consensual agreement of all the parties. These 'contracts' would have to be freely entered into by equal partners, and rationally negotiated for everyone's benefit. Family relationships were a different matter, for it seemed evident that these relationships are based on nature. Rulers and ruled are not drawn to each other by any natural longing or love, but lovers and families are. It was therefore expected that family relat...

Political Advertising and Driving the Message Home

One thing that political strategists believe is that their candidate must stay on message, so they pick a specific message and then drive that point home, unfortunately, things are changing a bit and this tactic seems to be backfiring a bit. You see, the newest generation is a click happy, nano-second group of folks and they are planning on voting this time around. Thus, if political campaigns keep playing the same old boring TV advertisements over and over again they are going to get bored and irritated. They want substance, variety and interesting fun commercials. This creates a huge problem because the political campaigns know that older voters vote 2:1 over younger voters and so the campaigns need to do what works for targeting baby-boomers without turning off the millennials. Remember, even though the millennials spend more time online than watching TV, they still watch TV some and so, if all they see is re-runs they are going to assign those candidates to "more of ...

Business Credit Insurance & Political Risk Coverage

Many companies that are involved in international business don't understand the nightmare that political upheaval can cause when it comes to their receivables. Trade credit insurance can eliminate this nightmare. Political risk coverage is a type of trade credit insurance that eliminates the difficulty of converting foreign currency to local currency. Usually, this is a non-issue since there is a booming foreign exchange market set up just for this purpose. Certain political situations can make it impossible to convert a given currency. Take a small country that is in the midst of a coup, will the new leadership honor the existing debts of the previous leadership? The willingness to honor debts is what determines the global value of a country's currency (since money is simply a representation of a country's willingness to honor its value). What about a country that has been declared a rogue nation by the global community? Such a declaration is generally accompa...

Political Communication Tools and Tactics

Every campaign needs a robust political communications arsenal to get the message out. And every fall, thousands of campaigns from coast to coast scramble against the clock to maximize the resources they have to pull off a victory. The best strategy is simply to plan ahead well in advance and arm yourself with the most effective communication tools you can. Here is a quick rundown on various tactics: Television:  It gets the widest possible exposure. However, it cannot target any specific groups. In fact, most of the people who watch political commercials don't vote. Regardless, television, while expensive, gets high marks for generating name recognition for any candidate. But remember that television viewing habits have changed dramatically and local stations don't get the audience they used to. Radio:  You can target radio to your demographics much better than television and it's cheaper than TV too. Works better in larger metro areas. While smaller communit...

Presentation Tips for Political Candidates

Are you running for election? Congratulations to you on your initiative. As a candidate for political office you need to do your homework and prepare. Learn the issues, take a position and build a network. One more thing - learn how to present your message well. And do it better than the competition. The mayoral candidates spoke at a community meeting. Four of the five candidates attended. They were each allowed an opening and closing statement. In between they were asked to answer several written questions from the audience. The candidates were allowed up to 90 seconds for each answer. As a professional speaker and executive speech coach I was under impressed by the candidates. But I was not surprised by the lack of presentation prowess. It would be so easy for political candidates to improve their presentations skills. Why do they neglect such a powerful tool of persuasion and success? Let's be clear. The purpose of these community meetings is to demonstrate tha...
